PAY FOR WHAT YOU WATCH IN 2015!
In recent years, web-based streaming has been the new age trend of watching TV. From HULU, Netflix, Amazon and now Google’s Chromecast — consumers are steadily shifting away from watching the television — the traditional way. Video game consoles have also taken backseat, with some users (and ourselves personally) using the machines to stream video content, more than actually gaming. Today, Sony Network Entertainment International officially unveiled some big news, with the announcement of their new cloud-based TV service, VUE.
The service has no timed release at the moment, but it’s expected to debut in the US on both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3. CBS, NBC, Fox SA, FX, Discovery, Bravo, MTV, Comedy Central and the Food Network are some of the stand out channels that will be available day one. However, there are a slew of key networks missing from VUE including: Disney, ABC, ESPN as well as Time Warner’s HBO, TNT, TBS and CNN network.
“Everyday TV is about to become extraordinary with our new cloud-based TV service, PlayStation™Vue,” said Andrew House, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. and Group Executive in charge of the Network Entertainment Business. “PlayStation™Vue reinvents the traditional viewing experience so your programming effortlessly finds you, enabling you to watch much more of what you want and search a lot less. PlayStation™Vue brings the best of live TV and a robust catalog of the latest content, always keeping you connected to what’s popular, new and trending. Today’s announcement builds on the historic success of PlayStation®4 and demonstrates what our company is capable of when we embrace disruption and stay true to gamers.”
Satellite and cable companies such as DirecTV, Verizon, Dish Network, Comcast and AT&T among others will not be required if you want the new PlayStation service. Currently, the average household pays nearly $90 a month for TV service, and media executives want to implement a $60 price point from Sony. This month, an invite-only BETA launches, which is expected to come with 70 channels (including locals).
One of the features we’ve come across so far in the press release is that every channel will instantly have VOD. So, if you’re a few moments late to a live event or your favorite reality show, you’ll have the power of rewinding from the start.
Look for more details to emerge next month for VUE’s official launch.
