We understand many of you probably don’t watch 60 Minutes on the regular, but they drop some gems every once in a while. Their most recent, would probably have to be their report on the Colorado “Green Rush” that’s happening, on the heels of that state making marijuana legal for medicinal and recreational purposes.
This past Sunday, they traveled to Detroit to explore what the city is looking like on the wake of bankruptcy, government corruption and a Renaissance that’s hardly being talked about. In the clip, you can see abandoned neighborhoods, schools and factories which populate much of Detroit and have seen up to two million Americans move out of the Motor City. You will meet the Bruce Wayne of the D, Mr. Dan Gilbert, who is single-handedly trying to transform the city and has successfully resurrected Detroit’s downtown into a healthy business oasis and is planning on tearing down every abandoned building still standing (about 78,000 to be exact). This doesn’t even include all the Detroit families who are helping restore the city through clean-up projects to eliminate trash dumping sites and those who have turned to urban farming as means of survival.
Although the Fire Department, Police Department and hard working city workers who are worried about the pension have little money to go around, the city is trying to clean up the mess left behind and revamp the budget, and get things back to normal. While some of what you see isn’t pretty, there is still a lot of beauty hidden in Detroit. Like most of the people that live there, you just have to work a little harder to find it.
For those not up on the current conditions in the 313, watch the report above and make yourself aware. Then send a prayer for Detroit and those who live there.
