Dave is back!
GQ has been slowly releasing their Man of the Year covers this week, with the first being Chris Pratt. Today, they unveiled their story with Dave Chappelle, who talked in depth about his time away from the limelight after Chappelle’s Show and the things that make him happy at this point in time. That’s not all he had to say, though. But he does seem like a calmer, more mature Dave.
The conversation touched on things like him returning to TV, fatherhood, embracing the love from his fans like he does, why doing so many shows at Radio City Music Hall in New York City was on his bucket list and even a little about Kanye West and Tyler Perry.
What is it that made you not talk yourself out of it this year? Why do ten shows at Radio City?
That’s a good question. I have a show-business bucket list. There’s just certain things that every entertainer always dreamed of doing. When I was 19, I used to walk up Sixth Avenue and look at the marquee of Radio City. I’d see the lines outside. I’d be like, “Man, I just want to… Radio City!” So then, last year, when I started going on the road, it was just because I wanted to be on the road, at first. There’s something cathartic about touring—it feels good to just engage people that way. But then, as it was progressing, I was like, “Well, this should all go somewhere. Where am I going with this?” It just so happened the venue was open during the same time frame I was willing to play. The venue opened up for an astounding ten days. And I said, “Well, can we do all ten? You know, can I even do that business? I haven’t played New York in so long.” I didn’t want to pass up on the opportunity. What’s another thing on that bucket list?
For one year, I want to do this thing where I guest-star on as many television shows as I possibly can. I love television. The fact that television ultimately made me famous was very gratifying for me. Chris Tucker did it in movies, and Chris Rock did it from his stand-up, which was very impressive. But you know, the thing that people most will remember me for is Chappelle’s Show. If I were to never do anything else, that show would be a culmination of what was a very long and tedious process of me learning how to be in the television business.
We can’t wait to see Dave back on television and we’re hoping he does get cast as a zombie in The Walking Dead. We’d even start watching Scandal if he becomes Olivia Pope’s love interest.
