There’s no way Chalky could be so naive that he thought he would actually come out of that meeting with Dr. Valentin Narcisse as shooter for him. The trust between the two was non-existant. Maitland knew what was about to go down as soon as she left. Chalky had to know he was a dead man walking deep down inside too.
At the least, he got to meet his daughter (we’re assuming the little girl that was with Maitland was his) and see his true love once again. He heard her voice, kissed her, found closure in what made him bitter for so many years. He took his ending as a man and even stuck a thorn into Narcisse’s side with that last comment before his death: “Ain’t nobody ever been free.”
