HBO’s “Vinyl” Breaks Down The Art of Turntablism

We’ve been watching HBO’s Vinyl series since it premiered and although the series has focused more on Rock-And-Roll/Punk, they have been showing flashes of the beginning of Hip-Hop.

In last night’s episode, Lester Grimes was seen at an old folks home with a DJ on the turntables. Turns out, that was a young DJ Kool Herc, who was experimenting with blending records. One of the elders in the spot was seen dancing to the “breaks” but wasn’t feeling the way he wouldn’t let the whole record play. When Herc asked Lester what he thought, it was clear that he saw the potential, but he told the DJ he needed a little more work.

In this clip, DJ Stretch Armstrong, DJ Red Alert explain how Hip-Hop started in the park, with block parties getting bigger and bigger, ultimately making it to the mainstream and the radio airwaves. Martin Scorsese and Mick Jagger also talk about why it was important to include the early era of Hip-Hop into Vinyl, even though the show deals more with Rock.

We’re curious to find out how they tie in the movement into the show, considering they’ve been teasing it this much in the first few episodes.
