As touchy as this subject is across American politics right now, Jimmy Kimmel provided some comedic relief over this recent Dennis Rodman controversy.
If you’re not up on what happened, apparently, Rodman and a group of retired NBA players made their way to North Korea to play a game of basketball in celebration for Kim Jong Un’s birthday. Rodman has been fairly close with the totalitarian leader ever since he made his way to the country last year, as part of a VICE story surrounding the Harlem Globe Trotters. Somehow, the U.S. government has wanted to take advantage of Rodman’s current relationship with Jong Un, and turned this into a political back and forth surrounding American Kenneth Bae, who is being held captive by North Korea.
Of course, Rodman is no diplomat. He’s just a former NBA player who has formed a friendship with the leader and wants no parts in any political schemes.
UPDATE: Dennis Rodman has apologized for his outburst on CNN, confessing he was drunk and overwhelmed by the controversy by the time he was interviewed.
While poking fun at the interview with Chris Cuomo of CNN’s “New Day” yesterday, Jimmy Kimmel went as far as to transcribe the length of Rodman’s meltdown on live TV, decrypting each sentence step by step (yea, we’re still confused at all of it too).
NBA Commissioner David Stern has denounced the player’s actions and said the NBA does not stand behind them and were “blinded by a check,” at the end of the day.
If you missed the full interview on CNN, you can watch that below.
What do you think of Dennis Rodman’s stance in all of this? Is he getting more backlash than he deserves? Is it his duty as an American to mend the conflict between the two countries and ask Kim Jong Un to release Kenneth Bae?
