DURANTULA Opens up to GQ
The perception of Kevin Durant in the public is how nice of a guy he is. If you watch him play on the court with the Oklahoma City Thunder, he’s the complete opposite. He’s lethal with the shot. He can beat you with his defense. He’ll kill your entire squad when he’s focused. But off the court, he’s still growing up.
In his interview with GQ, KD got personal about how it felt for his father to leave him at a young age. He says that was the first time he ever felt hurt in his life (him and his Pops are good now, he’s been involved in his life since the age of 16). He also touched on watching his aunt die right in front him from cancer. That’s what he thinks of when he remembers Washington DC, which is where everyone is speculating he will go to after his OKC contract is up in 2016.
For now, he says he doesn’t go there much. Family reunions, funerals and special occasions. He stays couped up in his hotel room if the team goes there for a game.
On the other side of things, although basketball is still a business, he emphasizes how much he’s been loyal to the Thunder. Even if he does what’s best for him, in terms of that decision, no one can question his loyalty.
“Players are paid to do their jobs, no matter who’s on the court. And as superstars, you gotta lead what you have. You gotta make them better. Some players might be better than others. Some teams might be better than others. You gotta do your job, and you gotta trust that the front office is going to do their job. It’s hard, though. You know what I’m saying? Because it’s like, shit, I want win. Obviously our players aren’t as good as, you know, than they were before. But you have to figure it out.”
Kevin has been maturing and doing things a little different the past few years. He’s been talking a little more. He moved out of house he shared with his friends. He called off an engagement with his fiance. He spends a lot of time by himself. He’s not mad at the Internet for taking his MVP speech and turning it into a meme, because that was a real moment for him. It was from the heart.
