Indie films are hard to gauge because you never know how they will fair when they’re released to the mainstream. Sea Of Trees wasn’t an absolute hit at the Cannes Film Festival and was passed up by Lionsgate as distribution.
The film stars Matthew McConaughey, a widowed husband who is feeling mighty down after the death of his wife (Naomi Watts). In the trailer, you can see the two go through the ups and downs of a marriage, taking their love for granted because of work. Turns out, those are flashbacks because after her death, McConaughey’s character goes to Japan to search for some sort of peace. He ends up finding zen in the “Suicide Forest” where he comes across a guy named Takumi, who talks that deep life shit with him.
The film is directed by Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting) and will be released in theaters on August 26.
