The business of temporary work has been booming with the recession and it may not be for the better of workers, just the mega corporation giants which exploit it.
VICE went to the Inland Empire, New Jersey and Chicago to find out just exactly goes in with companies that use temporary work to handle their day-to-day labor and finding out that they actually use temp agencies to hire outside workers, most who are immigrants. Paying them minimum wage, usually the agencies use “raiteros” to transport the people to work and threaten everyone involved with less work in order to keep them quiet.
Of course, the workers who get hired are barely making enough to survive, but they are caught with their backs against the wall so they’ll take the abuse and unfair treatment to live and provide for their families. Most came to this country to achieve the “American dream,” but quickly find out that it’s not like they thought it would be.
There is a misconception about temporary work that’s it’s actually temporary, but there have been cases that people have worked at the same factory for 5-10 years at a time. The only difference is, they receive no raises or better working conditions because they’re not actually hired by the company. One temp agency notes that only one out of 50 workers they seek out actually makes it into a permanent position.
