EPISODE VIII = December 15, 2017 | Avatar 2 = December 25, 2017

Over the holidays, James Cameron made the announcement that Avatar 2 would be arriving during the week of Christmas 2017. The project was unfortunately delayed a year ago to next year, which we’re assuming Disney is still disgruntled at not surpassing the original 2009 Avatar for highest grossing film all-time. While Star Wars: The Force Awakens could potentially eclipse Titanic for the second position, it won’t take down the James Cameron’s masterpiece.

Originally, Star Wars: Episode VII was slated to arrive May 26, 2017, but now Disney has decided to place the sequel from Rian Jonson head-to-head with Avatar 2 during the proceeding holiday season. Episode 8 is now on track to arrive to theaters December 17, 2017, which will now compete directly with the next Avatar – which releases a week later on Christmas Day.

Disney and Lucasfilm have now moved away from their traditional summer blockbuster window from year’s past and will be looking to over-top its previous release, as well as the Avatar series. Principal photography is scheduled to begin in London next month, and fans of both franchises can look for more details from each movie studio throughout the year.
