All for 5G?
After years of teasing the idea of a formal merge, T-Mobile and Sprint have officially announced plans today to merge. The new deal combines both T-Mobile US Inc. and Sprint Corp. in a whopping $146 billion-dollar merge, as the two will now take on industry leaders AT&T and Verizon.
The new company will use the T-Mobile name, with Sprint being phased out. T-Mobile’s chief executive officer, John Legere, announced the deal saying, “This combination will create a fierce competitor with the network scale to deliver more for consumers and businesses in the form of lower prices, more innovation, and a second-to-none network experience.”
At the moment, Verizon is still the largest U.S. carrier with 111 million subscribers, while AT&T is in a distant second at 78 million regular subscribers. Behind them is now T-Mobile, who’ve upped their wireless subscribers to 70 million. Look for new possible cheaper plans to be announced by next fall, along with a 5G roll-out date.
