There’s a thin line between innovative and creepy? Apparently so, because VICE traveled to Tokyo, Japan to explore the industry of commercial love. For those who have never been there and aren’t up on game, basically, the country has turned every aspect of relationships into commerce. People out there don’t date or have aspirations of getting married and having kids. They don’t believe in love. So much that they’re experiencing the fastest negative growth in history and by the end of century, their population will be cut in half. Women often find themselves choosing work over finding the “right guy” and most don’t even want a boyfriend to begin with.
Sex still sells, but in Japan, it’s more of a fabrication of what you want of a relationship, with no emotional attachment.
Surrounded by host clubs, cuddle cafe’s, anime dating and everything in between, money can and will pay for recreational affection and companionship. People actively pay for a good time where sex isn’t involved. One owner of a host club racks in about $800,000 a year to match women with hosts that talk and shower them with alcohol.
In the clip above, you will find out about what goes down at a cuddle cafe, host club and even the underworld of illegal activities, like dominatrices in hotels.
