For those who stuck around to watch last night’s Homeland season three finale, does the episode leave you in suspense for another season of the show?
Although it tied up loose ends that were dragged out for a greater part of the season, there are only a few questions left to ask moving forward. Usually during season finales, your mind is blown and the questions pile up and eat you up inside for months. None of this happened after watching last night’s episode.
Everything that should have transpired throughout the early part of the season (without the boring side plots), finally went down, leaving the show to play out much like a series finale, not a season one. We’re guessing Homeland will get a significant storyline refresh for the next round, but will you even be around to watch it?
Disclaimer: SPOILERS below.
Let’s just put it out there: This was the worst season of Homeland thus far.
The teenage love plot for Dana Brody was cute for an episode or two, but it played out for a huge part of the season and none of that was needed. How sad is it that she ended cleaning hotel rooms after leaving home and changing her name? As it has been reported, she and her mom will not be returning as recurring characters next season, and unless he’s not human, neither will Nicolas Brody, for obvious reasons (see: death).
With Brody dead and Carrie Mathison carrying his child, what’s left for the show? Will Homeland explore the possibility of Carrie being a manic mother? Saul Berenson is effectively out of the CIA and now working in the private sector, but it seems as if his character will be used less than in previous seasons, with the possibility of making a comeback at some point. Peter Quinn might make for some intriguing television, but not enough to save the downward spiraling franchise.
We can’t even think of any other plots or questions at this point. Maybe Carrie goes off to Istanbul and falls in love (um, obsesses) with a man over there. It’s possible her and Saul find each other and work on a plot so huge that even the new director can’t deny. What if Carrie becomes a loving and devoted mother?
Those storylines all seem plausible, but not intriguing. Unfortunately at this point, not even Carrie Mathison’s erratic crazyness can save the show.
