If anybody out there is still using Winamp, we hate to break it to you, but the player and all of its services will be shutting down next month. The popular player that reigned through the ’90s and early 2000’s announced today that as of December 21, it will cease to exist and will no longer offer downloads from that point forward.
Nullsoft (who made the player), sold Winamp to AOL back in 2012 for a reported 80 million in stock and not much has developed since. Winamp released Android and Mac versions of the player shortly after, but that clearly hasn’t been enough to keep them afloat. While it’s popularity was waned since the beginning of the millennium, Winamp will still live in our hearts as the go-to player for the past 10+ years.
Shit, we’re still using it as we type this.
“Winamp and associated web services will no longer be available past December 20, 2013. Additionally, Winamp Media players will no longer be available for download. Please download the latest version before that date. See release notes for latest improvements to this last release. Thanks for supporting the Winamp community for over 15 years.“
You can still download the latest version of the player over at their website for a very limited time before the company calls it quits. Pour out a little liquor for Winamp.
