Remember that dope ass Idris Elba starring Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom trailer from a few weeks back? It looks like another Mandela film is set to hit theaters soon, except this time, it will be from the perspective of Winnie, played by Academy Award Winning Jennifer Hudson. The film will chronicle her life through a rough childhood and during Nelson Mandela’s (played by Terrence Howard) time in prison.
No shots, but Idris looks like he’s lightyears ahead of Terrence’s character for this movie. Either way, it’s pretty coincidental that there would be two films about the Mandela’s out around roughly the same time. Which will prevail?
Winnie will be in theaters nationwide on September 6.
UPDATE: Winnie was originally premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in 2011 with lackluster reception. After being released in Canada in October of 2012 (to poor reviews), Image Entertainment acquired the rights to the film and is throwing up the hail mary in the United States in hopes of a different outcome.
