The first trailer for Nina, an upcoming biopic based on the life of Nina Simone, has been released today. It follows the later years of her life in France, and in particular her relationship with her assistant Clifton Henderson.
There’s been a fair share of controversy around Saldana playing the role, due to her figure and having to darken her skin. Mary J. Blige was originally set to play the role of Nina Simone, but she dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. The film — out April 22nd — was written and directed by Cynthia Mort and also stars David Oyelowo, Mike Epps and Ella Thomas.
Last year, a documentary called What Happened, Miss Simone? was released as a Netflix exclusive.
UPDATE: The official Nina Simone estate responded to Zoe playing the role in the biopic.
.@zoesaldana Cool story but please take Nina's name out your mouth. For the rest of your life.
