In recent years, my level of ratchet has toned down. Mostly because I’m getting older and don’t have the desires to get drunk all day and party. I’m more mature. I’ve made a more conscious effort to be healthy and enjoy life a little bit more. My priorities have switched up. It happens to all of us, but with such major changes in lifestyle, so have my music tastes. The Waka Flocka’s of the world have left my playlist. I don’t enjoy standing on couches to Rich Homie Quan. You won’t find me in clubs throwing back seven tequila shots while Migos plays. I just want to cool out and listen to some chill shit. I might have still indulged in the old ways at various times throughout the year, but I can’t even remember the last time I threw up from a crazy night out.
Which is why most of my picks are slow in tempo and more feel-good jawns. Pharrell making the world clap along, Vic Mensa on his Cali shit, Eddie Murphy with the reggae, Toro Y Moi and his medicated music, DOM Kennedy with that smooth L.A. soundtrack. Of course, my love for ignorance still crept into the mix because when that liquor hits the system.. ain’t no tellin (c) Jay-Z, but I’m soft-of mad I had to snub tracks like Hot Natured “Isis (Magic Carpet Ride),” the “UOENO (Remix)” with Wiz Khalifa and Mayer Hawthorne “Her Favorite Song” featuring Jessie Ware. Oh well.
