Often when hip-hop fans begin debating the greatest acts that were around during the ’90’s jazz rap era, it would only be fair to give Gang Starr credit for their contribution to the music industry. The duo of Guru and DJ Premier proved to be a deadly force when it came down to partnering creative rhymes with production of the same standard. 20 years ago saw the release of Guru’s debut solo album Jazzmatazz, Vol. 1, beginning a special journey for one of the culture’s biggest inspirations.
Sadly, today marks the 3-year anniversary of Guru’s passing, but we decided to put together our favorite tracks from the New York emcee in remembrance, including work that was assembled alone and songs that saw him partnering with other memorable artists. One thing that’s for sure, his music will continue to live on forever.
“It’s the message in the song that makes you rock on.”
