No matter what André 3000 is up to, he’s always going to face questions about why he doesn’t release more music. That’s the case with his latest GQ interview, where he talks about not putting out a solo project, having hours and hours of music on hard drives, producing for other artists, not being on the pulse and more.
On putting out more music and seeing the response, he says, “I’m with that, because I want to hear both sides of it. But if I were to drop dead right now, honestly, we’ve done it. And that’s the truth. You know what I mean? Here’s the only thing that I would regret: Man, you know, there is still that album that you wanted to do.”
“When I pass away, people will find hours and hours of files,” 3000 continues. “It’s hard drives of me just in the house alone playing horrible guitar. Me playing piano. Me playing a little sax. I was trying to find out: What can I be excited about? Because I never was, to me, a great producer or a great writer or a great rapper. I always felt that I was less than everybody else, so I fought harder.”
Even though he refuses to put out his own music, he’s been putting in work elsewhere. “I’ve been working on producing a few artists,” he says. “A couple projects. But here’s the crazy thing: I don’t have the pulse anymore. Rhythms change every generation. The intensity and the drums change. And I’m not on the pulse. I can’t pretend. It’s kinda like watching your uncle dance. So the only thing I can do is this kind of novelty, off thing for them.
