Aretha Franklin Has Passed Away at the Age of 76

The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, has passed away at the age of 76 in her home in Detroit due to complications of pancreatic cancer. She was surrounded by her friends and family after her health had declined recently. Franklin was diagnosed with cancer in 2010 and retired last year to take care of herself.

The soul singer was known for classic singles like “Respect,” “Think,” “Chain of Fools” and more singles, becoming the first woman to ever be inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (she was also inducted to the U.K Music Hall of Fame and Gospel Music Hall of Fame). Over the course of her career, Aretha was nominated for Grammys 44 times and ultimately won 18 of them.

In a statement by her publicist, Gwendolyn Quinn, she explained her family wishes during this tough time and her last moments on earth:

“It is with deep and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Aretha Louise Franklin, the Queen of Soul. Franklin … passed away on Thursday morning, August 16 at 9:50 a.m. at her home in Detroit, MI, surrounded by family and loved ones. In one of the darkest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our heart. We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family. The love she had for her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins knew no bounds.

We have been deeply touched by the incredible outpouring of love and support we have received from close friends, supporters and fans all around the world. Thank you for your compassion and prayers. We have felt your love for Aretha and it brings us comfort to know that her legacy will live on. As we grieve, we ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time.”

May Aretha Franklin rest in peace.
