Last night at the 57th Annual GRAMMY Awards, Beyonce sang “Take My Hand Precious Lord” before introducing John Legend and Common for “Glory,” which was the official end of the show. We saw people on Twitter questioning why Ledisi, who actually sang the track for the Selma soundtrack, wasn’t up there with Beyonce (at the LEAST), or singing the hymn instead.
Conveniently, Bey has released this behind-the-scenes video today to show what it took to bring that performance together, saying she first fell in love with the song in church when her mother showed it to her. She remembers how much it touched her when she first heard it.
She also gives some of her backup singers the time to share their story, not only in their lives, but about what’s happening in the world today with police brutality.
Beyonce also touches on some of the struggle her grandparents and parents went through with the Civil Rights movement, saying they experienced and marched with Martin Luther King. She hopes that this song helps raise awareness and speak for her family’s pain.
