With a project on the way this week, it’s no wonder Big Sean is going hard with the interviews and promo. Detroit 2 hits digital retailers September 4 and with the date so close, Vulture has released a talk they had with Sean Don.
In the interview, he spoke on Kanye West’s presidential campaign and why he wants his brother to be happy, processing the death of ex-girlfriend Naya Rivera and how “IDFWU” was never about her, and rumored beef with Kendrick Lamar.
But he also touched on other subjects like the new album, taking a break from music and why he didn’t participate in the G.O.O.D. Music album roll out.
On Detroit 2
“It was something I always wanted to do. When I was making Detroit 2, I felt like I was returning to my roots but with a stronger foundation. I feel like my roots got even deeper. Not only did I reconnect with myself, I reconnected with my passion and my hunger. The music reminded me of the Detroit mixtape while I was making it.”
On his hiatus between projects:
“I kind of felt like that when I was working on Dark Sky Paradise. With I Decided, I didn’t have as much time, but I still made sure that I didn’t try and rush it. I realized that I’m on my own schedule in my own lane. I’m not a new artist. I gotta treat things a little differently than they probably would. I had a lot of living to catch up on.”
On not putting out a G.O.O.D. Music 7-track album:
“I just wasn’t feeling the vibe. That’s no disrespect. I was loving the projects, but I just couldn’t get in the groove. That’s just something you can’t force. I thought Kids See Ghosts was crazy. I liked Teyana’s album. All the projects were very unique. But when it was time for me to really get in there on that, I guess I wasn’t inspired. I was going through things in my head that I was still working out. I wasn’t ready to be creative right then. When I tried to force it, I realized I’d be in the studio just beating a dead horse, listening to a beat over and over and over. It would start to get torturous. I was looking at it as a job: ‘You gotta get this amount of work done, or else.’ I was still more in an observant point, living through experiences in my life. I had to work my way back.”
