If you were up last night, Monday officially became LIT with the long-awaited release of Drake’s music video for “Hotline Bling.” Coincidentally, D.R.A.M. was in Toronto for his first ever performance north of the border and embraced the Canadian fans initially.
That was until he hit up social media seeds and saw a continuing trend of comparisons to his original “Cha Cha” single, something many are saying is similar to Drizzy’s new single.
This prompted the DMV rapper to go on a Twitter rant a few hours ago, citing that although he was cool with it for more exposure, he felt his original track got jacked from the 6-God. Now, the OVO front man has responded to those claims in a rare statement in below from Fader Magazine.
“You know, like in Jamaica, you’ll have a riddim and it’s like, everyone has to do a song on that. Imagine that in rap, or imagine that in R&B. Imagine if we got one beat and every single person—me, this guy, this guy, all these guys—had to do a song on that one beat. So sometimes I’ll pick a beat that’s a bit, like, sunnier, I guess is the word you used, than usual, and I just try my hand at it. And that’s kind of what ‘Hotline Bling’ was. And I loved it. It’s cool. I’ve been excited by that sort of creative process.”
