“I’m just blessed, nothing can go wrong” – Cole
Last month, J. Cole released his surprise 4th quarter album and third major effort, 2014 Forest Hills Drive. The concept-drive project went to quickly achieve critical-acclaim going GOLD within two weeks and capped off the year becoming one of the top selling albums for the year.
Although he had a few performances on late night to promote the project, the Roc Nation and Dreamville representative shied away from going on a drastic media run – in comparison to previous efforts. Unlike releasing this project and moving to his fourth studio album, Cole wants to allow this effort to breathe and receive its just-do. In a two-hour sit-down with The Combat Jack Show, he details becoming a voice for his generation and battling with unfortunate expectations to drop flawless projects every release.
He also opens up on wanting to sign Kendrick Lamar when they first met and being inspiring by the controversial “Control” verse from 2013. Listen to the entire conversation above with J. Cole also touching on how he’s been able to stay out of Drake’s lane and creating his own sound.
