Get Familiar with Jamila Woods

Jamila Woods has been around for a minute as a poet and half of Chicago duo M&O, but she’s probably best known for being that singer on Chance The Rapper’s epic theatrical single “Sunday Candy.” Now, after signing a deal with Closed Sessions, she’s making her big break as a solo artist in 2016. Her first single “blk girl soldier” is as bold as they come and serves as a freedom song for black women.

“I drew inspiration from a protest chant I learned at a Black Youth Project 100 meeting in Chicago. I love how music and chants were used in the Civil Rights movement to help people keep marching. How songs were both a balm and a call to action. I’m interested in figuring out what freedom songs would sound like in 2016. My hope is that ‘blk girl soldier’ is a freedom song for black women today who are fighting the macro and microagressions of daily life in our city/country/world.”

The track was produced by Jus Cuz and Saba and is the start of big things to come for Jamila Woods, with her debut project out in the next few months.
