Kanye West Issues Statement on Billboard Music Awards Censorship

QUIT TRYING TO CENSOR MUSIC, THIS IS FOR YOUR KIDS AMUSEMENT

If you happened to stick around the entire time for the Billboard Music Awards this year (or maybe you didn’t and just caught the performance footage after the fact), maybe you saw Kanye West hit the stage last to perform his new hit “All Day” and Yeezus single “Black Skinhead.”

You probably didn’t hear much, because the performance was edited ferociously, to the point couldn’t hear half of it. It’s not clear whether the show’s producers weren’t familiar with the song, so they edited half the verses or what, but plenty of people wondered why Yeezy kept cutting off. It wasn’t your mute button and Kanye certainly wasn’t going off with curse words on an ABC show.

Today, Kanye’s reps have released a statement regarding this event:

Kanye West was grossly over-censored at the Billboard Music Awards. Non-profane lyrics such as “with my leather black jeans on” were muted for over 30 second intervals. As a result, his voice and performance were seriously misrepresented.

It is ridiculous that in 2015, unwarranted censorship is something that artists still have to fight against.

Although West was clearly set up to face elements beyond his control during the live broadcast, he would like to apologize to the television audience who were unable to enjoy the performance the way he envisioned.

We can wait for that official Yeezy rant to hit Twitter in 3…2….1.
