The undisputed king of pop
It’s hard for any artist to go platinum nowadays (you know, besides Adele), let alone diamond. Those types of accomplishments are for the likes of Whitney Houston, Eminem, 2pac‘s Greatest Hits, The Beatles, Phil Collins, N*SYNC and the likes. Going double diamond is a whole other class which only three acts are in: Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Michael Jackson.
Thriller has always been the highest selling album of all time, but it has now reached a monumental achievement that no other album has ever done. It is now certified 30x platinum, officially making it triple diamond, the first album ever to do it in the U.S.
As if you needed another reason to argue why MJ is the King of Pop forever. He’s already totaled 100 million sales worldwide in the 33 years the album has been alive and has already broken Billboard chart records before and after his passing.
RIAA chairman and CEO Cary Sherman said this about the achievement:
“RIAA has awarded Gold & Platinum records on behalf of the music business for nearly 60 years, but this is the first time an artist has crossed the 30X multi-Platinum plateau. We are honored to celebrate the unique status of Thriller in Gold & Platinum history. What an exceptional achievement and testament to Thriller’s enduring spot in our hearts and musical history.”
