Music Industry Writes Letter to Donald Trump for Intellectual Property Protection

For years, the music industry has been battling against download websites and illegal fire sharing. It seems like streaming services have cut down on that, because people have turned to that for their music fix rather than the old methods of pirating.

Now, companies like ASCAP, BMI, and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) have written a letter to President-Elect Donald Trump, urging him to side with intellectual property protections when he takes office. This comes at the heels of him holding a “tech summit” meeting tomorrow in Silicon Valley to talk to folks like Apple’s Tim Cook, Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg and Alphabet’s Larry Page and Eric Schmidt.

“Surely the world’s most sophisticated technology corporations can do better – by helping to prevent illegal access and paying fair market value for music with prices set by or based on the free market. Strong protection for intellectual property rights will assure growth in both creativity and technology, benefiting the American economy as a whole.”

Though streaming exclusives cause a percentage of people to look towards alternatives to listen to the music, the groups still emphasize that search engines, hosting companies and domain name registrars can do more to curb piracy.
