Def Jam was in full effect in 1997, as LL Cool J and the likes of Method Man, Redman and DMX connected through the “4, 3, 2, 1” single from his Phenomenon album. This track was a classic for a variety of different things. For one, it was the introduction of DMX. It also sparked a beef between LL and Canibus, who was originally featured on the song but was left off of the video because of the lines in his verse.
LL found one line disrespectful, and told Can to switch it up but he didn’t. This sparked a feud between the two, enough that diss records were made following.
Fans ate it up at the time, and it only propelled the record. Here’s one to LL.
