Despite the legal ramifications of the “Blurred Lines” lawsuit, Pharrell has been quite mum about the court’s decision thus far. The Marvin Gaye family has been very active in the media and such, even putting out a letter to explain why they went after both Williams and Robin Thicke. It has come to surface that they will also be going after several labels that aided in distributing the record and have filed a motion to stop the selling of the smash single.
After weeks of silence, Pharrell finally spoke on the proceedings:
“The verdict handicaps any creator out there who is making something that might be inspired by something else. This applies to fashion, music, design… anything. If we lose our freedom to be inspired, we’re going to look up one day and the entertainment industry as we know it will be frozen in litigation. This is about protecting the intellectual rights of people who have ideas. Everything that’s around you in a room was inspired by something or someone. If you kill that, there’s no creativity.”
