Contrary to earlier reports, Pimp C’s untimely demise was not the result of a drug overdose. They did find high levels of promethazine/codeine in his blood but it was not a fatal amount. The rapper had a history of sleep apnea which played a major role in his death last December 4th.
Sleep apnea causes people to stop breathing for up to 30 seconds at a time while asleep. Slow or shallow breathing is a known side effect of promethazine. Ed Winter, from the LA County coroner’s office ruled the side effects of codeine, coupled with sleep apnea, contributed to the death. The official also mentioned Pimp C had a legal prescription for the cough medicine. If the prescribing physician had prior knowlege of his sleeping disorder that should be grounds for a major lawsuit.
