Following the backlash from Surviving R. Kelly, not only are users muting R. Kelly through Spotify but now it looks like whole cities are banning him from coming to their town.
The Philadelphia city council has passed a resolution that will declare R. Kelly unwelcome in the city. Helen Gym, a city council member for Philly, announced the news and was the co-sponsor of the resolution that passed. This was in response to the Lifetime docuseries, where women detailed their abuse from the veteran singer and explained all the hardships they went through. It also sparked the #MuteRKelly campaign on social media.
The ban will not be physically enforced, but the city hopes to establish a culture that will not tolerate sexual abuse:
“The resolution is about not accepting. It’s about being clear that we will not accept a future where rape is accepted…We’re not going to turn a blind eye to pain and we will not allow the silencing of black women in favor of powerful men.”
Today our resolution honoring the #MuteRKelly movement passed in @PHLCouncil. Philly stands with survivors. pic.twitter.com/Kg7T172as8
