Future Monster 2?, Beast Mode 2
Essential listening in 2015: DS2
Release Date: First Quarter
Future undoubtedly had the greatest year of any rapper in 2015. After October’s monster that was Monster, Future Hendrix went on a tear in 2015 that will be remembered for the ages. January him and Zaytoven came together for Beast Mode, March he dropped 56 Nights, which spawned the hits “Trap Niggas” and “March Madness” and just when we thought we’d had enough he hit us with his third album, DS2. DS2 reached heights his sophomore album held him back from and made his fan base even stronger than it already had grown. The album shot to number 1 with 151,000 units sold (30,000 came from streams) and Future seemed to be at the top of the rap game.
Where rappers and Future differ is his crazy work ethic. One would assume he’d been done for the year, but rumors started flying that he was dropping a mixtape with Drake and in the coming weeks that’s exactly what happened. What A Time To Be Alive also shot to number 1. If you’re not counting, that’s two critically acclaimed mixtapes and two number one albums in one year. Future also managed to outshine Drake throughout the tape and many called it a Future mixtape featuring Drake. That’s a big statement seeing as Drake is one of if not the biggest rapper in the game today.
So what’s next for Future? He’s teased Monster 2 and Beast Mode 2, and got everyone’s hopes up on Thanksgiving when we all thought he was dropping the oft delayed Mike Will collab mixtape Ape Shit. He definitely has a trick up his sleeve and him, and frequent producer of his music Metro Boomin’ have both been making snapchats and Instagram videos previewing new music. Knowing Future this has to mean new music is on the horizon. He’s going on tour with Ty Dolla $ign next month so a project before that wouldn’t be a big surprise. Stay tuned for whatever Future Vandross has in store for 2016.
