You know when you’re watching a NiteCap episode with Peter Bailey, you’re hearing a deeper conversation with each artist. His next sit-down is with TDE’s ScHoolboy Q and they had a very interesting conversation about life and other topics.
Before he even jumped it off, he described Q as the new age of gangsta rap and described the fact that it’s a lost art form. A lot of what they talked about was based around that and how Gangsta Rap can be a gimmick versus how it’s perceived from the people actually really living in those neighborhoods. That opened up the doors to speak on the different aspects of LA gang life and how it affects everyone. Q also talked about growing up on Hoover/Figueroa and how his family dichotomy was growing up.

One thing that struck this interview different than others is how much Q emphasized what family really means to him. There were a few instances where he spoke on how his daughter means everything to him and what he’s done as a father to make sure she’s good and taken care of. Even when doing music, he thinks about her in decisions like putting video girls in the videos or not or how he comes off in his music. He keeps it real with her when stuff happens (a boy called her a “bitch” at school), but there’s certain things he watches out for so he doesn’t send her the wrong message.
This also spilled over to his thoughts on making videos on the block, making “Break The Bank” the first of its kind coming from him. To his day, Q says he regrets shooting that visual at his grandma’s house and his reasoning behind it is very intelligent.
