Last night was a big moment for grime. Skepta was announced as the winner of this year’s Mercury Prize, the award ceremony that highlights the best albums from the UK. With Konnichiwa, the London emcee beat the likes of David Bowie and Radiohead to the prestigious award. “We, as a jury, decided that if Bowie was looking down on the Hammersmith Apollo tonight, he would want the 2016 Hyundai Mercury Music Prize to go to Skepta,” said judge Jarvis Cocker.

Skepta is the second ever grime artist to win the Mercury Prize, following the award for Dizzee Rascal’s Boy in da Corner back in 2003.
