It’s time to get familiar with Rick Rubin if you’re not already (we’re talking to you young’ns). You know, the bearded guy in Jay-Z‘s Magna Carta commercials, or the guy who was enlisted to help Kanye West finish Yeezus? If you didn’t already know, Rick goes back, WAY BACK, pretty much back to the beginning of commercial rap, founding a little label with Russell Simmons called Def Jam (maybe you’ve heard of it).
His contributions across the span of his career don’t even stick to rap either. He’s also helped rock bands in his 30+ years in the game, contributing to efforts from the likes of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, System Of A Down, Black Sabbath, Audioslave, Metallica, Rage Against The Machine, Linking Park. Shit, he even helped ADELE.
As much as DJ Trackstar and The Smoking Section wanted to include all of the hits he’s been a part of, it was impossible, so they only highlighted some of the tracks he’s had his hands in. A bulk of (Some Of) The Best Of Rick Rubin includes classics from Run DMC and LL Cool J, but they sprinkled in a bit of dope rock too to balance it out.
