In 2015 I spent a lot of time going back listening to classic R&B music and a lot of old Jay Z, but when I did check out what the year had to offer musically it was predominately West Coast as usual.
Drake got the year started off right with his highly-anticipated mixtape turned album If You’re Reading This It’s To Late, and Compton K. Dot followed right behind to address some social issues with his sophomore project To Pimp A Butterfly, which stayed in rotation for me the whole year. Midway through 2015, the Odd Future general Tyler The, Creator dropped off his Cherry Bomb album that really grew on me sonically, then Chicago front-runner Chance The Rapper and The Social Experiment put out Surf, going down as my favorite album of the year. Of course I joined the “Future Hive” with Future‘s back to back mixtape run and the release of DS2, but the west still took over my headphones, with the young boy Vince Staples helping us take on a trip to north Long Beach in Summertime 06′, and the OG Dr. Dre coming out the dungeon and dropping off Compton. Oh and don’t forget Inglewood’s gatekeeper Skeme finally givng us his third and best installment of the Ingleworld trilogy.
Overall the year was very solid. There was a lot of good and a lot of really bad projects throughout the year. In my opinion, the west still came out on top, as usual!
