Summer Jam Write-Up by thekidLEGEND
I was late so i arrived just as D-Block was being introduced. The whole crowd could be heard chanting “This is D-Block, Mighty Mighty D-Block” and shortly thereafter, a medley of their songs started playing through the speakers that had every fan “Wild(ing) Out”. Then the Paper Touching (Remix) came on. Fabolous and Fat Joe lent their helping hand alongside Red Cafe and Kid Capri on the 1’s and 2’s as the crowd was getting rowdy and the song ended. Jadakiss made his way to the stage and performed “We Gon Make It” followed by a Noreaga “Banned from TV” surprise feature performance that had the crowd wylin. Swizz Beats also made a guest appearance in true Ruff Ryder fashion as he performed “Where the Cash At?” By this time, the crowd was so amped, that people were getting arrested left and right. LL Cool J made his way on the stage and got every lady headsprung before “Rock The Bells” kicked in, and he skated out of the stage.
Then the Florida set kicked in with T-pain and the whole sherade that proceeded shortly after with him doing some dance that had people shaking their heads. The highlight of the set, was when DJ Khaled, Rick Ross & Akon came out as they performed “Im So Hood”, “I’m The Boss” and “We Taking Over” respectively. I don’t know if it was just me, but I thought Mr. Pain’s lypsynching got old as the crowd didn’t react to him and Akon performing “Bartender” and “Buy You a Drank” at the end of their set.
Then it was time for Lil Wayne to hit the stage. He got a crazy response as he graced his entrance singing A Millie. Most of the crowd could be heard spitting the lyrics while he didnt. The fun didn’t stop though, because in Carter III fashion, he promoted the new album every chance he got. He went on a flurry of medleys including those songs and remixes in which he guest appeared on, and the crowd response was almost minimal especially as he performed his old catalogue. As expected, outer chlothing was removed and this time it was right before performing “Fireman”. At the end of the song, he stopped for a second and pulled out his guitar and went Weezy F. Hendrix on the crowd. Most didn’t know what to think of the sherade as he plucked his strings and sat on the stool singing God knows what. As he finished his woodstock wanna-be performance, “Pussy Monster” kicked in acapella, with a beatbox background beat as the song progressed, that ended up with him rolling around with his back on the stage floor by the songs end. When “Lollipop” kicked in, the crowd didn’t really respond, until Kanye West bursted out on the stage for the reeemix baaaabyyy, followed by Wayne leaving the stage, Whitney Houston “I Will Always Love You” style.
Kanye west kicked off his performance with “Diamonds From Sierra Leone” in exploding fashion. As “Champion” played, fireworks started going off, scaring the crowd half to death, once the first ones went off. “Get ‘Em High” and “Jesus Walks” were crazy with the lights and everything going off simultaneously. “Homecoming” was good, followed by a surprise Consequence feature with “The Good, The Bad, The Ugly”, which was crazy. After he left, Yeezy followed with “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” and the crowd went wild once “Put On” started playing and Young Jeezy hit the stage. “Flashing Lights” was quite the performance, even if he did forget the lyrics and freestyled a verse off the top. As far as im concerned, noone in the crowd even knew he did that, so he shouldnt get knowcked for it. “Stronger” was amazing as fireworks shot out from the top of the stage. Then he did a new freestyle that i presume is from the new album, considering he told everyone he was hitting the studio to work on some new ish right after the concert, and he ended his set with “The Good Life” featuring T-Pain. The fireworks display ending the whole set had me thinking it was 4th of July in June.
Public Enemy tore down the stage for the old heads, and they got more love than I would have thought considering the younger crowd present was bearly even born when P.E. came out. They kicked it off with a 9yr old girl spewing knowledge way above her level trying to get the crowd to FIGHT THE POWER. I tend to think, the knowledge them dudes dropped throughout the ccourse of their performance went WAY over peoples heads, but i praise them for the effort. One thing that they mentioned that i wont forget is how they said “With Power, Comes Responsibility.” Not alot of people got that, and even as the people chanted “Fight The Power”, im not sure if they quite understood what they were saying.
As a surprise guest, they brought out Jim Jones and the rest of Dipset (minus Camron…now THAT would have been historic). “Certified Gangstas” and “Santanas Town” blasted through the speakers and the crowd was amped. Jimmy, Juelz and Hell Rell did their thing as the closer, showcasing that “Byrdgang Money” and how much theyre “Ballinnnnn”. No lie, the Stack Bundles tribute was nice to hear, but i would have wanted to see Riot Squad do a special guest appearance or something.
All in all, Summer Jam 08 was a good time. Ive never been to another one, so i really cant judge based on previous experiences, but seeing Nas & Jay in the recaps of past years…im not sure if this one faired as far as historic events. Having Kanye West and Lil Wayne on the same staged was huge for the younger crowd though. Even with that said, Summer Jam still shits on other concerts happening within a 6 month radius.
