“Shine” (2010)
An artist that you could easily partner with The Roots is John Legend based on their similar style of recording on its own. Wake Up! happened to be a collaborative album between the singer and group, focusing on the topic of consciousness and soul music from over 40-50 years ago. Live instrumentation was key in putting the project together, and one that was able to be a successful when performing for large audiences.
The last track on the album was easily one of the album’s strongest belongings. “Shine” gave John Legend a chance to project his voice in an emotional tone that differed from what we’ve heard through his albums over the years, and also showed the audience more variety in terms of a mellow mood from the band.
