The Roots: 20 Years

“Make My” (2011)

Critically acclaimed from many across the world, The Roots’ Undun told a story like never before. Their aim was to put across a short story of a fictional character named Redford Stevens throughout the struggle of living through poverty. The project once again shined through its usage of snares on the production, helping the band put together a steady arrangement of jazz to work with the storyline. It was Questlove who was in charge of the majority of choices made, with the album being recorded in very few locations before finishing as a final product.

The Big K.R.I.T.-featured recording titled “Make My” was only third on the tracklist for the album, but managed to set an emotional tone for the remaining 10 songs. It was important for the vocalists to pinpoint a specific understanding of loneliness and pain, which was portrayed in such a professional manner.

“They told me that the ends won’t justify the means. They told me at the end, don’t justify the dreams.”
