The Roots: 20 Years

“Act Too (The Love Of My Life)” (1999)

It may not seem long at all, but Things Fall Apart was released after a three-year gap in their catalog – the longest period of time since they first started as a band. This project is considered to be The Roots’ major breakthrough to a widespread audience, as they linked with the likes of Erykah Badu, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Mos Def, J Dilla and many more to complete the experience. The album was also a demonstration of the Civil Rights Movement in attempt to put equality before the law itself.

Undoubtedly one of their classic singles, “Act Too (The Love Of My Life)” could be counted as a symbol to the hip-hop culture. Not only did the track present the pure essence of the genre, but Common (Sense) also played a major part with a signature verse.

“And it sounds so nice, hip-hop you the love of my life.”
