The Roots: 20 Years

“Clock With No Hands” (2006)

Adding to their change of style over the years, a sensational difference to the production was thanks to the help of popular software GarageBand. Putting the emphasis on a computer-generated software was always going to effect a specific sound in some ways, but The Roots were able to make Game Theory darker than ever thanks to their new focus. It was evident that J Dilla was a huge influence over the entirety of the project, which differed from other acts at the time by even sampling UK band Radiohead on one of the tracks.

The 11th single on the album titled “Clock With No Hands” may be reminiscent of Kendrick Lamar’s “P&P,” which used an exquisite sample from the track to guide it to popular underground success. Mercedes Martinez definitely handled the hook to an exceptional standard.

“I never said that you mean the world to me, maybe it’s best that you never know.”
