Whether you’ve been paying attention to a few of your favorite artists talking about it or not, Twitter has launched a new app for music discover today. The service has gone live on the web and will be available at the iTunes app store for iPhone users.
What does the app do? Essentially, it take Twitter activity from artists and friends you follow and categorizes them into sections which include emerging acts, what your followers are playing, most popular and suggested tracks based on your profile. The app automatically defaults to an iTunes preview of the song, so don’t think you can play certain tracks in full. Twitter Music will pull information from RDIO & Spotify where applicable.
As the ABC News report calls it, it’s the “modern day mixtape.”
Except it’s not.
Although Twitter Music is still in its infant stages, it has a long way to go before it revolutionizes the way people listen to music. Who wants to listen to 30-second snippets all day? What happens if you don’t have RDIO or Spotify? How will you discover the absolute newest music surfacing on the net? As of right now, you can’t.
The potential is there, but they still have to work out the kinks on this one. Go fuck with it yourself at https://music.twitter.com/ and let us know your thoughts.
