Look for Ty$ on SWISH sometime this year
In a few weeks, Ty Dolla $ign will go on the road this winter with Future, for their Purple Reign Tour. Before the Los Angeles hit-maker goes into artist mode for an extended promotional run of his debut album, Free TC, he sat down with XXL to discuss his recent music activities.
Aside from discussing how the Pu$ha Ink collective of himself, DJ Mustard and YG revived the West Coast earlier this decade, Ty$ went to explain his epic studio session with Babyface and the pair’s creation process for “Solid.” After revealing how him and his boys had a little too much smoke in the air for the legendary R&B crooner, he touched on his working relationship with Kanye West – which has transitioned from his project to the Chicago musician’s upcoming SWISH album.
You’ve been working more with Kanye lately. How did that relationship start?
I’ve been knowing ’Ye for awhile. He just called me in recently to start working with him. I’m very thankful he’s on the album. That’s like having Michael Jackson on your album in 2015. He’s been one of my favorites since he came out. I’ve always been a hip-hop head. I fuck with J Dilla beats, Pete Rock beats, DJ Premier and Madlib. That’s what he’s on, that crate digging and vinyl.Besides Kanye, who are your biggest musical inspirations?
J Dilla is the top producer of all time, in my book, alongside Timbaland and Pharrell. Then DJ Mustard. I like everything, I weird people out all the time with the shit that I listen to. I just learn from [different] people, every day.
