Warner Bros. Strikes Licensing Deal With Soundcloud

Major labels are taking over

Soundcloud has been in a predicament this year. The major labels have been taking down plenty of their material because of copyright infringement, causing artists, DJ’s and producers to find other alternatives to get their sounds out there. Soundcloud has also been operating at a loss, so their platform was in need of major change.

To combat the dilemma of copyright, they have now struck a deal with Warner Bros. Records to license the songs under their label, as well as the songwriters signed to Warner/Chappell. This means all artists under the umbrella of WB can choose whether to have their tracks on Soundcloud and will get paid for every play. This includes when a song is in a mix or a remix/mashup was made by any producer or DJ. It is significantly different than making their catalog available like Spotify.

With ads coming to SC and more major labels signing on to partner with them, expect the way you use Soundcloud to be very different come 2015.
