The Weeknd Will Continue Boycotting GRAMMYs Even After Rule Changes

Being a trendsetter when it comes to his stance on The GRAMMYs after being snubbed for his highly successful After Hours album, The Weeknd is not budging.

On April 30, The Recording Academy announced they would do away with their anonymous voting committee that’s been in place since ’89 and changing the process. According to them, it’ll be “transparent and equitable.” As of now, review committees will be out and GRAMMY voters will determine categories by a majority, peer-to-peer vote of the members.

That means review committees for things like Album of the Year, Record/Song of the Year, Best New Artist have been eliminated.

This all takes place starting at the 64th annual GRAMMY Awards on January 31, 2022.

Regardless of these major changes for The GRAMMYs, Abel is not changing his stance on the show or the voting process and will continue boycotting. This is what he told the New York Times:

“Even though I won’t be submitting my music, the Grammys’ recent admission of corruption will hopefully be a positive move for the future of this plagued award and give the artist community the respect it deserves with a transparent voting process.”

Republic Records will not be submitting his music for GRAMMY consideration.

Will any more artists follow suit and support The Weeknd with this or will he stand alone moving forward? That’s something to keep an eye on.
