Emanating live from SXSW ’14 in Austin, Chicago producer Young Chop was featuring next for NPR’s interview series Microphone Check. In the sit-down with Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Frannie Kelley for NPR, Chop’s conversation was centered on theme “I Gotta Stay Working,” which he revealed even in the midst of enjoying the festivities he has to find a studio every day to keep his ideas fresh. The young 20-year-old cited Al Green and 2Pac among others as the legends who he studies lyrically and why certain sounds were implemented at specific parts of the records. He then went on to reveal the Neptunes was his biggest producer inspiration growing up and joked how some producers are trying to use his original producing styles.
He also spoke on giving advice to the fellow up and comers getting major deals and being able to separate their past street life with the business life. Ali would ask Chop what his top 3 produced songs were and cited Chief Keef’s street-singles “I Don’t Like,” “Love SOSA,” and Big Sean’s 2012-hit “Mula.” Check after the jump to watch the full SXSW interview with Young Chop.
