Can Gregg Poppovich & Kawhi Leonard motivate LaMarcus Aldridge?
It’s the beginning of another year and San Antonio Spurs are being ignored again. We purposely put them last on this list because this is the most slept on team in the entire NBA. With Kawhi Leonard still out of action due to an injured quad, the Gregg Popovich system will continue with the current crop of players they have. The team quietly snatched up Rudy Gay and Coach Pop is in no rush to bring back the best player in the NBA. Over the summer, LaMarcus Aldridge had an intervention with the team, as he broke down crying over his role, before both sides eventually mending things up.
This week, the team agreed to a three-year, $72.3 million contract extension, which will ensure him a stay until the 2021 season. Their entire season comes down to whether or not LaMarcus will finally fit-in with the Pop system. We’ve already seen the two discussing their summer together to work on improving the relationship. We’re never ones to doubt the league’s best coach and most successful system, in this post-Michael Jordan era. However, if the entire Spurs team is hopefully healthy, the blame could sadly fall in the hands of Aldridge if San Antonio doesn’t at least push themselves to a game 7 conference finals appearance.
