49ers Release Ray McDonald Amidst New Assault Charge Allegations

NFL: San Francisco 49ers at Arizona Cardinals

More disappointment in San Francisco

The San Francisco 49ers and DT Ray McDonald have officially parted ways. The defensive tackle is now being investigated for a second sexual assault allegation, only three months after the first accusations came to light. The Niners stood by McDonald throughout the first incident and said they would wait for “due process,” but the organization felt like his poor decision making was the last straw and released him effective immediately.

Although he was never charged for the prior incident involving his fiance and sexual assault charges, general manager Trent Baalke described this as a pattern that will not be tolerated by the team and they would not wait for due process in this situation.

The news comes in the wake of a very disappointing season, which has seen turmoil in the locker room and between Jim Harbaugh and management. Not to mention the fact they missed the playoffs after reaching the conference championship game two years in a row. It might also point towards a complete rebuild with the coaching staff and team come 2015.
