Adrien Broner 12th Round Knockdown Not Enough in Decision Loss to Shawn Porter

back to the drawing board for the problem!

Saturday night, The MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Nevada was the host for the big Welterweight showdown between Adrien Broner and Shawn Porter. Both fighters came into the fight with only one loss on their entire professional career, as Porter was looking to move back up in the ranks after losing his IBF Welterweight title last August. While Broner refused to shake the hand of his opponent during the weigh-ins Friday night afternoon, Porter used it as added motivation to stay on the flamboyant fighter – for the battle of Ohio.

Throughout the fight, Adrien often over-used his clinch to try for lack-of jab defense against Shawn, including not being able to connect his signature flurry combos throughout the night. The ref allowed the holds to continue on to way into the later rounds, but Broner was officially charged with a point for continuing to clinch.

With obvious desperation lingering from Adrien’s camp, he came out in the 12th round aggressive for the first time all night, and would knockdown Shawn for the first time ever in his career. Porter soon recovered, as it wasn’t enough for The Problem to pull away with the rally effort.

The judges soon revealed their cards: 118-109, 115-111, and 114-112 all in favor for Showtime. Although Broner had a losing effort, he didn’t get tagged in the defeat but will obviously move down in rankings and could likely face Andre Berto. Whether or not Porter gets his rematch against Kell Brook this year remains to be seen, but this convincing win should propel his rankings to jump directly back into the conversations.
